A striking modernist etching by Dutch artist Reijer Stolk, featuring a man and horse rendered through sharp, geometric lines and high-contrast forms.
This etching by the Dutch artist Reijer Stolk captures a dynamic interaction between a rider and his mount. Stolk, a figure associated with the early twentieth-century Dutch avant-garde, employs a rigorous geometric approach to the composition. The forms of the man and the horse are broken down into sharp, angular planes, reflecting the influence of Cubism and Expressionism on his practice during this period.
The work relies on a stark contrast between deep black ink and the negative space of the paper. Stolk uses varied hatching techniques to create texture and volume, guiding the eye across the fragmented anatomy of the subjects. The horse is rendered through bold, decisive lines that suggest movement and tension, while the rider is integrated into the structural geometry of the scene. This reduction of the subject to its essential components allows the viewer to focus on the interplay of light, shadow, and form rather than literal representation.
Stolk was active in the Netherlands during a time of significant artistic experimentation. His graphic work often explored themes of labour and rural life, yet he consistently applied a modernist lens to these traditional subjects. The print demonstrates his technical proficiency with the etching needle, as he manages to balance dense, dark areas with lighter, more open sections of the composition. The result is a work that feels both grounded in its subject matter and abstract in its execution. It provides a clear example of how European artists of the era sought to reconcile traditional motifs with the new visual languages emerging from the continent's major art centres.
