A classic engraving by William Blake from his illustrations for Edward Young’s Night Thoughts, depicting a sleeping figure surrounded by ethereal spirits.
This engraving is a plate from William Blake’s ambitious project to illustrate Edward Young’s poem, Night Thoughts. The composition features a central block of text surrounded by ethereal, floating figures that represent the wandering soul during sleep. At the base of the page, a man lies in a deep slumber, his head resting upon an open book. This figure serves as the anchor for the scene, grounding the metaphysical imagery above.
Blake employs a delicate line quality to render the anatomy of the figures, which appear weightless and fluid. The surrounding illustrations depict the soul in various states of motion, reflecting the themes of the poem regarding the immortality of the spirit and the nature of dreams. The contrast between the heavy, physical presence of the sleeping man and the light, almost transparent forms of the spirits creates a visual dialogue between the material world and the realm of the imagination.
As a printmaker, Blake was known for his unique approach to combining text and image. In this series, he left wide margins specifically to accommodate his illustrations, allowing the artwork to interact directly with the printed verses. The result is a page where the typography and the drawing occupy the same space, creating a unified visual experience. This particular plate demonstrates Blake’s ability to interpret complex theological and philosophical concepts through a classical, yet highly personal, aesthetic lens. The figures are rendered with a sense of grace, typical of his late eighteenth-century style, where the human form is used to express internal states of being rather than mere physical reality.
