A nineteenth-century Dutch genre painting depicting a man resting on a beach beside a grounded boat and oxen.
This work by the Dutch painter Johan Daniël Koelman captures a quiet moment of labour and rest along the coast. The composition features a man resting on the ground, his posture relaxed as he leans back, while nearby, a team of oxen stands ready beside a grounded boat. The scene is defined by the expansive, muted sky and the textured, sandy foreground, which draw the viewer into the atmosphere of a nineteenth-century maritime environment.
Koelman, active during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, often focused on the daily lives of people within their natural surroundings. His approach to this scene demonstrates a careful observation of light and shadow, particularly in the way the sun catches the flanks of the cattle and the figure of the man. The boat, with its masts reaching toward the horizon, provides a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal expanse of the beach. The inclusion of the oxen suggests a scene of coastal transport or fishing, where animals were frequently employed to haul vessels or equipment across the sand.
The painting reflects the sensibilities of the period, where genre scenes offered a glimpse into the routines of rural and coastal workers. Koelman employs a palette of earthy tones, ranging from the deep browns of the cattle to the soft blues of the sky, creating a sense of harmony between the figures and their environment. The work is presented in a decorative, ornate gold frame, which contrasts with the humble nature of the subject matter. Through precise brushwork and a balanced arrangement of elements, the artist documents a specific way of life, capturing the stillness of a moment before the work continues.
