A sixteenth-century engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicting two equestrian Mamluk figures within decorative borders, characteristic of Renaissance costume studies.
This engraving by Abraham de Bruyn depicts two figures identified as Mamluks, presented within decorative borders. De Bruyn, a Flemish engraver and publisher active in Antwerp, produced numerous works documenting the diverse costumes and social types of the sixteenth century. His output often served as a visual catalogue for a European audience curious about distant cultures and historical figures.
The left panel shows a mounted figure with a tall headdress, holding a lance, accompanied by a Latin and German inscription. The right panel features a similar equestrian figure, also framed by an ornamental border. The style reflects the precision characteristic of late sixteenth-century printmaking, where the focus remains on the accurate rendering of garments, weaponry, and posture. The borders contain small motifs of flora and fauna, a common decorative device in the period to frame ethnographic or historical subjects.
These prints belong to a broader tradition of costume books, which gained popularity during the Renaissance as travel and trade expanded. De Bruyn utilised fine, controlled lines to define the textures of the horses and the layered clothing of the riders. The composition is balanced, with the figures set against a minimal ground, allowing the viewer to examine the details of the attire without distraction. The work provides insight into how European artists of the period conceptualised and categorised non-European identities through the lens of contemporary print culture. The paper shows signs of age, consistent with its origin as a page from a historical volume, preserving the original plate marks and the delicate quality of the ink work.
