A classic ukiyo-e woodblock print by Utagawa Hiroshige depicting the Maizaka station on the Tōkaidō road. It features labourers loading cargo against a backdrop of coastal mountains.
Maizaka is the thirty-first station in Utagawa Hiroshige's series, The Fifty-three Stations of the Tōkaidō. This series recorded the journey along the coastal road connecting Edo and Kyoto. The print depicts the Imagiri ferry crossing, a necessary water passage for travellers on this route. In the foreground, several labourers are engaged in moving cargo. One man carries a heavy load on a pole across his shoulders, while others handle rectangular crates near a moored boat. The composition uses the vertical masts of the ferry boats on the left to balance the tall, leaning pine trees on the right. These elements frame the central view of the water and the distant mountains. Hiroshige used a specific colour palette for this woodblock print. The deep blue of the water contrasts with the pale orange and yellow tones of the sky near the horizon, suggesting either dawn or dusk. The large mountain in the centre is rendered with green and blue gradients, a technique known as bokashi. This method allows for smooth transitions in colour, adding a sense of atmospheric depth to the scene. The artist's focus on the daily activities of common people was a hallmark of the ukiyo-e genre. By placing the workers in the immediate foreground, Hiroshige provides a human scale to the expansive coastal scenery. The technical precision of the woodblock carving is evident in the fine lines of the pine needles and the detailed calligraphy of the series title and station name in the upper corners.
