This woodblock print by Tsukioka Yoshitoshi, titled 'Maisaka', showcases a large pleasure boat sailing on a blue sea, adorned with flags and filled with figures, rendered in the traditional ukiyo-e style.
Tsukioka Yoshitoshi (1839-1892) was a Japanese printmaker regarded as one of the last great masters of ukiyo-e, the art of woodblock printing. His career spanned the transition from traditional Japanese life to modernisation, and his work reflects this change, often depicting historical and contemporary subjects with a flair for the dramatic and the macabre. Yoshitoshi's prints are known for their dynamic compositions, expressive figures, and innovative use of colour. He influenced many subsequent generations of artists. 'Maisaka' depicts a large, ornate pleasure boat sailing on a blue sea. The boat is adorned with flags and banners, and filled with figures under a striped awning. The stern of the boat is red and gold, with a fan-like structure extending into the water. In the background, a distant mountain rises against a pale sky. The print is characterised by its fine lines, flat planes of colour, and decorative details, typical of ukiyo-e.
