A traditional Chinese woodblock print featuring two magpies on a flowering branch, rendered with precise lines and soft, naturalistic colours.
This woodblock print by Ding Liangxian depicts two magpies perched upon a flowering branch. The composition follows the traditional Chinese bird-and-flower genre, which prioritises the observation of nature and the symbolic associations of flora and fauna. In Chinese culture, the magpie is a bird of good fortune, often associated with joyful news or auspicious events. The pairing of the birds suggests harmony and companionship.
The print demonstrates the technical precision of Chinese woodblock printing during the late Ming or early Qing period. The artist employs a clear, controlled line to define the plumage of the birds and the texture of the bark. The colour palette is restrained, using soft washes of orange and green to contrast with the deep black of the magpie feathers. The branches are rendered with a deliberate, rhythmic quality, guiding the eye across the paper surface. The negative space remains an active component of the design, allowing the subjects to occupy the frame without clutter.
Ding Liangxian was a practitioner of the Ten Bamboo Studio style, a school of printmaking that refined the use of multi-block colour printing. This technique allowed for subtle gradations of tone and a painterly effect that mimicked brushwork. The inclusion of calligraphy in the upper left corner provides context, identifying the subject and the artist. Such prints were often produced for manuals or as decorative sheets for scholars and collectors. This work reflects the period's interest in natural history and the aesthetic refinement of everyday objects. The print remains a clear example of the intersection between technical craft and artistic observation in historical Chinese printmaking.
