A classic High Renaissance composition by Titian, depicting the Virgin and Child with Saint John the Baptist and Saint Joseph.
The Madonna of the Cherries, attributed to the Venetian master Titian, represents a characteristic example of his early sixteenth-century output. The composition features the Virgin Mary at the centre, holding the Christ Child, who reaches towards a sprig of cherries held by the infant Saint John the Baptist. To the left stands Saint Joseph, while an elderly figure, often identified as Saint Zacharias, completes the group on the right. The figures are arranged in a horizontal format, a common configuration for Venetian devotional paintings of this period.
Titian employs a warm, tonal palette, moving away from the rigid outlines found in earlier Quattrocento works. The soft modelling of the flesh tones and the fluid handling of the drapery demonstrate his mastery of oil paint. The cherries held by the children serve as a symbolic reference to the Passion, as the red fruit prefigures the blood of Christ. Behind the central figures, a red cloth hangs against a sky, providing a backdrop that separates the holy family from the exterior environment. The interaction between the figures is gentle and naturalistic, avoiding the static poses often seen in contemporary religious art.
This work reflects the Venetian interest in colour and light, which Titian developed throughout his career. The paint application is layered, allowing for subtle transitions in shadow and light across the faces and hands of the subjects. The inclusion of the scroll held by the young Saint John, inscribed with the words 'Ecce Agnus', provides a clear iconographic link to his role as the precursor to Christ. The painting remains a study in domestic intimacy, presenting the sacred figures in a humanised, approachable manner that was highly sought after by private patrons in Venice during the early 1500s.
