A serene and intimate depiction of the Virgin nursing the infant Christ, painted by the Flemish master Petrus Christus in the mid-fifteenth century.
Petrus Christus, a central figure in the Bruges school of the fifteenth century, produced this intimate depiction of the Virgin and Child. The composition focuses on the act of nursing, a subject that gained popularity in Northern European art as a means to humanise the divine figures. The Virgin is shown with a serene expression, her gaze directed slightly away from the viewer, while the infant Christ reaches towards her. Christus employs the characteristic oil technique of the period, allowing for a smooth application of colour and subtle transitions in light. The dark, neutral background serves to isolate the figures, directing attention to the tactile quality of the skin and the folds of the drapery. The Virgin wears a deep purple gown beneath a red mantle, colours traditionally associated with her status and humanity. A delicate gold halo, rendered with fine, radiating lines, encircles her head, while a smaller, more schematic halo appears behind the infant. The anatomical rendering of the figures reflects the artist's interest in the naturalistic observation common among his contemporaries. The hands of the Virgin are depicted with care, supporting the child firmly yet gently. The painting demonstrates the influence of Jan van Eyck, under whom Christus likely worked, particularly in the meticulous attention to surface textures and the clarity of form. This work remains a representative example of the devotional art produced for private contemplation during the late medieval period in the Low Countries.
