A classic High Renaissance altarpiece by Lorenzo Lotto, featuring the Madonna and Child surrounded by four saints in a structured architectural setting.
Painted in 1505 for the church of Santa Cristina al Tiverone, this altarpiece demonstrates the early stylistic development of Lorenzo Lotto. The composition follows the traditional sacra conversazione format, placing the Virgin and Child at the centre, flanked by four saints. To the left stand Saint Peter and Saint Christina of Bolsena, while Saint Liberalis and Saint Jerome occupy the right side.
Lotto employs a sophisticated architectural setting, using a classical archway to frame the figures. The perspective is carefully constructed, drawing the eye toward the elevated throne. The artist pays particular attention to the textures of the garments, from the heavy, voluminous folds of Saint Jerome's cardinal robes to the delicate fabric of the Virgin's attire. The inclusion of an ornate, patterned textile draped over the throne base adds a decorative element that contrasts with the architectural austerity of the background.
The lighting is deliberate, casting soft shadows that define the physical presence of each saint. Saint Christina holds a globe, a symbolic object that balances the composition against the verticality of the banner held by Saint Liberalis. Lotto's approach to the human form is grounded in observation, giving each figure a distinct psychological presence. The colour palette is dominated by deep reds, warm ochres, and muted blues, typical of the Venetian school during this period. This work remains a clear example of Lotto's ability to synthesise the influence of his contemporaries with his own developing sense of drama and spatial clarity.
