A masterful engraving by Raphael Morghen after Andrea del Sarto's Madonna del Sacco, capturing the grace and structural clarity of the Renaissance original.
This engraving by Raphael Morghen reproduces the famous fresco by Andrea del Sarto, known as the Madonna del Sacco. The original work is located in the cloister of the Basilica della Santissima Annunziata in Florence. Morghen, a master of the burin, translates the soft, atmospheric qualities of del Sarto's painting into a precise system of lines and cross-hatching. The composition depicts the Virgin Mary seated with the Christ Child, while Saint Joseph rests nearby, leaning against a sack of grain, which provides the work with its common name.
Morghen captures the sculptural quality of the figures and the architectural framing of the original fresco. The arched setting is rendered with careful attention to perspective, creating a sense of depth that draws the viewer into the scene. The artist employs a range of tonal values to suggest the play of light across the drapery and the soft contours of the figures. The Latin inscriptions integrated into the architectural elements are preserved with clarity, maintaining the formal character of the original mural.
As a reproductive printmaker, Morghen was highly regarded for his ability to convey the spirit of Renaissance masters to a wider audience. This print demonstrates his technical control, particularly in the rendering of textures, from the heavy folds of the garments to the smooth surfaces of the stone arch. The work reflects the Neoclassical interest in clarity, order, and the study of historical precedents. It remains a fine example of late eighteenth-century printmaking, where the engraver functioned as both a technician and an interpreter of classical art. The print is presented with the original dedication to Marchese Manfredini, typical of the high-status commissions Morghen received during his career in Florence.
