Caravaggio's *Madonna and Child with St. Anne*, painted between 1605 and 1606, exemplifies Italian Baroque art through its dramatic use of light and shadow and its realistic portrayal of religious figures.
Painted between 1605 and 1606, Caravaggio's *Madonna and Child with St. Anne* is a striking example of Italian Baroque art. The painting depicts the Virgin Mary, her mother Saint Anne, and the infant Jesus, who is shown stepping on a snake, a symbol of original sin. Caravaggio's use of tenebrism, a dramatic contrast between light and dark, heightens the emotional intensity of the scene. The figures emerge from a dark background, illuminated by a strong, directional light that sculpts their forms and emphasises their expressions. The Virgin Mary is depicted with a realistic, almost earthy quality, a departure from the idealised representations common in earlier Renaissance art. Saint Anne, portrayed as an older woman, stands behind Mary, her face etched with a sense of quiet contemplation. The infant Jesus, nude and active, adds a dynamic element to the composition. The painting's naturalism and its rejection of idealised beauty were controversial at the time, but it also marked a significant shift in the development of Baroque painting. The work is currently held in the Musée du Louvre, Paris.
