A classic Renaissance composition by Luca Signorelli, featuring the Virgin and Child surrounded by saints and angels, rendered with anatomical precision.
This composition by Luca Signorelli displays the characteristic anatomical precision and sculptural clarity associated with the Tuscan master. The central figure of the Virgin Mary is seated upon a raised dais, holding the Christ Child. She is surrounded by a celestial retinue of angels, while two prominent saints occupy the foreground. To the left, Saint Michael the Archangel is depicted in classical armour, holding a pair of scales, a traditional attribute representing his role in the weighing of souls. Beside him, a saint is shown in a contemplative posture, while to the right, a bishop saint reads from a codex, his vestments rendered with careful attention to textile folds and ecclesiastical detail.
Signorelli employs a structured, pyramidal arrangement that draws the eye toward the central figures. The palette is balanced, utilising primary colours in the drapery of the saints to create a visual rhythm against the more muted tones of the architectural setting. The artist's interest in human form is evident in the muscular definition of the figures and the naturalistic rendering of the hands and feet. The background remains relatively simple, allowing the figures to occupy the space with a sense of physical presence. This work reflects the transition from the early Renaissance interest in linear perspective to the more robust, volumetric style that would influence later artists of the period. The painting serves as an example of the devotional art produced in the late fifteenth century, where theological narrative is combined with a rigorous approach to human anatomy and spatial organisation.
