A serene High Renaissance composition by Pietro Perugino, featuring the Madonna and Child flanked by Saint John the Evangelist and Saint Augustine.
This composition, painted by Pietro Perugino in 1494, represents the balanced, harmonious aesthetic characteristic of the Italian High Renaissance. The work depicts the Virgin Mary seated upon a throne, holding the Christ Child. She is flanked by Saint John the Evangelist on the left and Saint Augustine on the right. The figures are arranged within a shallow, architectural space defined by a semicircular arch, which provides a sense of order and clarity.
Perugino employs a clear, measured approach to space. The figures possess a calm, contemplative quality, with soft modelling of the faces and drapery. The colour palette is deliberate, featuring deep reds, blues, and earthy tones that ground the figures within the frame. The base of the throne includes a cartellino, or inscribed plaque, which identifies the artist and the date of completion. This inclusion of the signature serves as a formal declaration of authorship, common in works of this period.
As a master of the Umbrian school, Perugino influenced many of his contemporaries, including Raphael. His ability to create a sense of serenity through symmetrical composition and gentle light is evident here. The figures do not interact with one another in a narrative sense; rather, they exist in a state of quiet devotion. The architectural backdrop, while simple, provides a structural framework that directs the viewer's attention toward the central figures of the Madonna and Child. This print captures the precise brushwork and the balanced geometry that defined Perugino's contribution to the development of Renaissance painting.
