A refined Sienese Renaissance panel painting featuring the Madonna and Child with Saints Jerome and Mary Magdalen, presented in an ornate gilded frame.
This work by the Sienese painter and sculptor Neroccio de' Landi displays the refined aesthetic characteristic of the late fifteenth-century Italian Renaissance. The composition features the Virgin Mary holding the Christ Child, flanked by Saint Jerome on the left and Saint Mary Magdalen on the right. The figures are arranged with a sense of calm, their expressions marked by a gentle, melancholic grace that is typical of Neroccio's hand. The artist employs a delicate application of tempera, creating smooth transitions in the flesh tones and a subtle luminosity in the drapery.
The painting is housed within an elaborate, gilded architectural frame, which includes a lunette at the top depicting the Man of Sorrows supported by two angels. The inscription 'AVE GRATIA PLENA' runs across the frieze, directly referencing the Annunciation. The use of gold leaf throughout the frame and the halos provides a stark contrast to the soft, muted colours of the figures' garments. This combination of religious iconography and decorative craftsmanship reflects the devotional practices of the period in Siena.
Neroccio de' Landi was a prominent figure in the Sienese school, often collaborating with Francesco di Giorgio Martini. His style is noted for its linear elegance and the elongated proportions of his subjects. This particular panel demonstrates his ability to integrate human figures into a structured, ornamental environment. The work remains a clear example of the transition between the Gothic tradition and the humanistic focus of the Renaissance. The attention to detail, from the individual curls of the Christ Child to the textured beard of Saint Jerome, reveals the technical precision applied to devotional objects intended for private or ecclesiastical use.
