A serene Early Renaissance composition by Piero della Francesca, featuring the Virgin and Child surrounded by four angels in a balanced, architectural setting.
This composition by Piero della Francesca displays the mathematical precision and geometric clarity characteristic of his work. The central figure of the Virgin Mary sits upon a raised dais, holding the Christ Child. She is flanked by four angels, two on each side, who stand in a symmetrical arrangement. The figures are placed within an architectural setting defined by classical columns and a frieze, which reflects the artist's interest in perspective and spatial order.
The figures possess a sculptural quality, with their forms modelled through light and shadow. The Virgin wears a dark blue mantle over a red dress, while the angels are dressed in robes of varying colours, including white and red. The Christ Child reaches towards a small flower held by the Virgin, a detail that introduces a human element to the otherwise formal and static scene. The faces of the figures are rendered with a calm, detached expression, typical of the artist's approach to portraiture and religious subjects.
Piero della Francesca was a master of light, and here he uses it to define the volume of the figures and the depth of the space. The light appears even and diffused, avoiding dramatic contrasts in favour of a clear, rational illumination. The architectural background, with its clean lines and restrained decoration, provides a stable environment for the figures. This work demonstrates the artist's ability to combine religious iconography with the principles of humanism and geometry that defined the Italian Renaissance. The panel is currently housed in the Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts.
