A refined Rococo portrait by Jean-Marc Nattier, depicting Madame Marsollier and her daughter in a moment of domestic grace.
Jean-Marc Nattier, a painter to the French court, produced this portrait of Madame Marsollier and her daughter in 1749. The work displays the characteristic refinement of the mid-eighteenth-century French aristocracy. Nattier was known for his ability to flatter his sitters, often incorporating mythological attributes or domestic settings that suggested grace and leisure.
In this composition, the mother and daughter are positioned before a dressing table. Madame Marsollier holds a small flower, while her daughter reaches up to adjust her hair. The scene is framed by a heavy, dark drapery above, which contrasts with the luminous quality of the subjects' skin and the sheen of their silk garments. The palette relies on cool blues and whites, balanced by the warmer tones of the daughter's shawl and the gold accents of the furniture.
The inclusion of the mirror and the jewellery box suggests a private, domestic moment, yet the execution remains formal. Nattier employs a soft, painterly technique that minimises harsh edges, creating a sense of atmospheric unity across the canvas. The architectural elements in the background, including a suggestion of a garden, provide depth to the interior space. This portrait captures the aesthetic preferences of the period, where the depiction of status was intertwined with a display of personal charm and familial affection. The work is currently held in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York.
