A detailed sixteenth-century engraving by Theodor de Bry depicting the personification of the Moon, Luna, accompanied by the zodiacal symbol of Cancer.
This engraving by Theodor de Bry depicts the personification of the Moon, labelled as 'Luna' and 'Noctis Domina' (Mistress of the Night). The figure stands amidst a cloud-filled sky, holding a crescent moon that contains a human profile. A long staff rests in her hand, and a large crustacean, representing the zodiac sign Cancer, lies at her feet. The composition follows the conventions of late sixteenth-century allegorical printmaking, where celestial bodies were frequently associated with specific zodiacal influences and classical mythology.
De Bry, a skilled engraver and goldsmith, utilised precise hatching and cross-hatching techniques to model the figure and the surrounding atmosphere. The drapery of the figure's garments is rendered with a sense of movement, suggesting a gentle breeze. The inclusion of the crab at the base of the composition provides a direct link to the astrological domain of the Moon, which governs the sign of Cancer. The banner at the top, bearing the name 'LVNA', is typical of the period's cartographic and scientific illustrations, which often combined decorative elements with educational intent.
This work reflects the period's interest in the intersection of astronomy, astrology, and classical iconography. The print is executed with a high degree of technical control, characteristic of de Bry's workshop in Frankfurt. The clarity of the line work allows for a detailed examination of the figure's posture and the symbolic objects associated with the lunar deity. As an example of Northern Renaissance print culture, this piece demonstrates the meticulous approach to copperplate engraving that defined the era's production of series depicting planetary deities and their earthly associations.
