A classic photochrom print by William Henry Jackson, capturing the dramatic Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River from the iconic Artist Point.
This image captures the Lower Falls of the Yellowstone River as viewed from the vantage point known as Artist Point. Produced using the photochrom process, the print translates a black and white photographic negative into a colourised image through the application of multiple lithographic stones. This technique was popular at the turn of the twentieth century for its ability to render topographical subjects with a painterly quality.
William Henry Jackson, a photographer who documented the American West, utilised his extensive experience in field photography to frame this composition. The foreground features the rugged, light-coloured rhyolite cliffs that define the canyon walls. These geological formations contrast with the deep greens of the coniferous forest and the turquoise hue of the river below. The waterfall itself appears as a vertical white streak, providing a sense of scale against the vastness of the canyon.
The perspective from Artist Point allows for a clear view of the canyon's depth and the erosion patterns along the walls. The photochrom process softens the harshness of the direct sunlight, creating a balanced tonal range across the scene. This print reflects the era's fascination with the American wilderness and the efforts to document national parks for a public audience. The composition remains a classic representation of Yellowstone, documenting the site as it appeared during the late nineteenth century.
