A 1631 etching by Jan Georg van Vliet, based on a design by Rembrandt, depicting the biblical scene of Lot and his daughters.
This etching by Jan Georg van Vliet, dated 1631, depicts the biblical narrative of Lot and his daughters. The composition is based on a design by Rembrandt van Rijn, as indicated by the inscription 'R. van Rijn inventor' at the base of the print. Van Vliet was a prolific printmaker who frequently collaborated with Rembrandt during the early 1630s, translating the master's painterly concepts into the medium of etching.
The scene captures a moment of intoxication and moral ambiguity. Lot is shown in a state of disarray, reclining on the ground while holding a chalice aloft. One daughter pours wine from a jug, while the other stands behind, observing the scene. In the background, a distant city is engulfed in flames, referencing the destruction of Sodom. The artist employs a dramatic use of light and shadow, characteristic of the period, to define the figures against the dark, atmospheric backdrop. The textures of the clothing, the fur-lined garments, and the metallic sheen of the vessels are rendered with precise, varied line work.
Van Vliet's technique demonstrates a clear understanding of the tonal possibilities within etching. He uses dense hatching to create deep shadows, which contrast with the lighter areas of the figures' skin and the glowing horizon. This work provides insight into the collaborative nature of the Dutch print market in the seventeenth century, where artists often worked in tandem to produce reproductions of popular compositions. The print remains a representative example of the technical skill required to translate complex narrative scenes into monochrome graphic art, maintaining the dramatic tension inherent in the original design.
