A fine mezzotint portrait of Lord Newton by Charles Turner, after the original painting by Sir Henry Raeburn.
This mezzotint by Charles Turner depicts Charles Hay, Lord Newton, a Scottish judge known for his legal acumen and formidable presence. Turner, a master of the mezzotint process, captures the textures of the subject's judicial robes and the powdered wig with remarkable tonal range. The medium of mezzotint allows for a smooth transition between light and shadow, creating a soft, atmospheric quality that defines the sitter's features against a dark, nondescript background.
The portrait is based on an original painting by Sir Henry Raeburn. Turner translates Raeburn's painterly brushwork into the precise, velvety blacks and subtle greys characteristic of high-quality nineteenth-century printmaking. The composition focuses on the upper torso and head of Lord Newton, presenting him in a three-quarter view. His expression is one of stern authority, consistent with his reputation in the Scottish legal system of the period.
Charles Turner was a prolific engraver who worked extensively with J.M.W. Turner on the Liber Studiorum. His technical skill in mezzotint is evident here, particularly in the way he renders the light reflecting off the fabric of the robes and the subtle modelling of the face. This print serves as a record of the visual culture of the early nineteenth century, documenting the appearance of public figures through the collaborative efforts of painter and engraver. The work remains a fine example of the reproductive print tradition, where the engraver's ability to interpret the original oil painting is paramount to the final aesthetic result.
