Lochmaddy gathers a copper harbour beacon, slate-roofed houses and still blue water into a calm island scene with the settlement rising gently from the shore.

At the waterline, square stone blocks form a pier beside a dark sluice opening, while pale rocks and seaweed mark the shallows in front. White gabled houses step across a grassy slope, their chimneys and dark roofs set below wide layers of cream cloud. A small copper beacon stands above the masonry, catching the warmest note in the scene.

Residents and returning visitors to Lochmaddy may recognise the harbour's close relationship with the shore. The low tide colours, the practical pier and the clustered houses suggest the pause between arrivals and departures around North Uist. It gives a visitor a particular image to take away from the crossing, and a resident a familiar meeting of stone, water and weather.
