Description
Llyn Idwal in Eryri mirrors a craggy mountain face in blue-green water, with a stony shore path, golden grass and rusty heather under bright summer clouds.
Llyn Idwal lies within a glacial hollow in the Glyderau mountains of north Wales. Ice shaped the surrounding cliffs and left moraines and smoothed boulders around the lake. Cwm Idwal became Wales’ first National Nature Reserve in 1954, recognised for exceptional geology and rare plants.
A jagged grey peak rises beyond the far shore, its sunlit yellow slopes reflected in deep teal water. Across the near bank, a stone-edged footpath curves through boulders and rusty heather, passing a short wall close to the lake. Broad pale clouds fill the sky above the cirque, bringing a warm summer brightness to the exposed mountain setting.
