A precise woodcut by Reijer Stolk, presenting a systematic list of human arm and leg muscles in German and Latin, rendered in a bold, modernist typographic style.
This woodcut by the Dutch artist Reijer Stolk presents a systematic anatomical catalogue of human arm and leg muscles. The composition is strictly functional, organised into categories such as shoulder, upper arm, forearm, hip, thigh, and lower leg. Each entry provides a German common name paired with its corresponding Latin medical term, reflecting the scientific rigour often associated with early twentieth-century anatomical study.
Stolk, who was associated with the De Stijl movement, employs a stark, geometric approach to typography. The letters are rendered with a bold, block-like quality that prioritises clarity and structural order over decorative flourish. The use of solid black bars to delineate sections creates a rhythmic, grid-like appearance on the page. This aesthetic choice aligns with the broader modernist interest in reduction, clarity, and the integration of text as a visual element within a composition.
The print is devoid of illustrative diagrams, focusing entirely on the linguistic classification of the human musculoskeletal system. By stripping away the visual representation of the body, Stolk forces the viewer to engage with the nomenclature itself. The work functions as a piece of graphic design, demonstrating how technical information can be presented through a disciplined, minimalist lens. The paper shows signs of age, providing a tactile quality that contrasts with the precise, mechanical nature of the printed text. This piece offers a unique perspective on the intersection of medical science and the avant-garde graphic sensibilities of the Dutch modernists.
