A stark, observational graphite drawing by Aat Breur-Hibma documenting the conditions within the Ravensbrück concentration camp.
This drawing by Aat Breur-Hibma is a stark, observational record of the conditions within the Ravensbrück concentration camp. Breur-Hibma, a Dutch resistance member, produced these sketches clandestinely during her imprisonment. The work captures the grim reality of the camp, depicting figures on a stone floor with a direct, unadorned approach to line and form.
The composition is sparse, focusing on the physical state of the subjects. The artist uses thin, graphite lines to delineate the emaciated figures, avoiding any stylistic embellishment. The torn edge of the paper suggests the precarious circumstances under which the work was created, as materials were scarce and the act of drawing was dangerous. The figures are rendered with a sense of detachment that conveys the gravity of the environment without resorting to melodrama.
Breur-Hibma's work functions as a visual diary. It provides a specific, personal account of the dehumanisation experienced by prisoners. The lack of depth and the focus on the arrangement of bodies on the floor create a sense of immediate, claustrophobic reality. By documenting these scenes, the artist preserved evidence of the atrocities witnessed during the Second World War. This print offers a clear reproduction of the original sketch, maintaining the texture of the paper and the faint, deliberate marks of the graphite. It is a piece of historical documentation that requires careful consideration of its context as a record of survival and resistance.
