A striking woodcut by Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, featuring a recumbent cow rendered in bold, simplified forms and high-contrast black and white.
Samuel Jessurun de Mesquita, a Dutch graphic artist, produced this woodcut titled Liggende koe, or Recumbent Cow, around 1918. The work displays his characteristic approach to printmaking, where he prioritises bold, simplified forms and a stark contrast between light and dark areas. The cow is rendered with minimal detail, focusing instead on the silhouette and the weight of the animal as it rests within a confined space.
De Mesquita was known for his technical precision and his ability to capture the essence of his subjects through economy of line. In this print, the background is treated with vertical striations that suggest a stable or enclosure, providing a rhythmic counterpoint to the solid, dark mass of the cow. The artist avoids unnecessary ornamentation, allowing the viewer to focus on the interplay of the black ink against the paper tone. His work often reflects a synthesis of observation and stylisation, a hallmark of his contribution to early twentieth-century Dutch graphic arts.
The composition is balanced, with the cow positioned centrally, its head turned slightly towards the viewer. The lines are deliberate and clean, typical of the woodcut medium where every mark is a result of careful carving. This piece offers a clear example of the artist's interest in animal subjects, a recurring theme throughout his career. The print is a quiet, observational study that demonstrates his command over the woodblock, resulting in a graphic image that remains visually arresting despite its simplicity. It is an excellent example of the modernist aesthetic that favoured clarity and directness in artistic expression.
