A refined example of Ming Dynasty cursive script calligraphy by the scholar-artist Wen Jia, featuring fluid brushwork and traditional collector seals.
This piece presents a fine example of Ming Dynasty calligraphy by Wen Jia (1501-1583), a scholar-official and artist from the Suzhou region. As the son of the celebrated painter Wen Zhengming, Wen Jia operated within the intellectual circles of the Wu School, where the practice of calligraphy was considered a direct expression of the artist's character and cultivation.
In this letter to Yao Zhi, the brushwork demonstrates a fluid, cursive script style. The characters are arranged within vertical columns, a traditional format that dictates the rhythm of the reader's eye as they move across the page. The ink density varies, showing the pressure and speed of the brush as it touches the paper. The composition is balanced, with the negative space between the columns providing a sense of clarity and order.
Several red seals are visible, which serve as marks of ownership or authentication from later collectors. These seals provide a physical record of the document's journey through time, connecting the original recipient to subsequent generations of connoisseurs. The paper itself retains a warm, aged tone, which complements the dark, monochromatic ink. This work offers a glimpse into the personal correspondence of a Ming scholar, where the act of writing was as much an aesthetic pursuit as a method of communication. It reflects the values of the literati class, who prioritised elegance, restraint, and historical continuity in their artistic output. The work is a study in controlled movement, where the individual strokes reveal the confidence of the calligrapher's hand.
