This work by Tanomura Chokunyū presents a fine example of Japanese literati calligraphy, or Bunjinga. Chokunyū, a student of the renowned painter Tanomura Chikuden, maintained the traditions of the scholar-painter throughout the Meiji period. The composition features fluid, expressive brushwork that prioritises the rhythm of the ink over strict legibility. The characters flow across the paper with varying pressure, creating a sense of movement and spontaneity typical of the literati tradition.
The ink application demonstrates a mastery of control, with subtle tonal shifts from deep black to lighter, washed-out grey. This variation provides a visual texture that complements the rhythmic nature of the script.
