The Letter about a Stomachache, or Du tong tie, is a primary example of the wild cursive script, or kuangcao, associated with the Tang Dynasty calligrapher Zhang Xu. This work displays a departure from the regulated, balanced structures of earlier calligraphic traditions. Instead, the brushwork exhibits a rapid, fluid motion that prioritises the expression of the artist's internal state over strict legibility.
Zhang Xu is often grouped with Huaisu as a master of this unrestrained style. The characters in this piece appear to flow into one another, with varying pressure and speed creating a sense of kinetic energy. The ink application ranges from thick, saturated strokes to thin, dry lines, reflecting the physical rhythm of the writing process. The composition lacks the rigid grid structure typical of formal clerical or regular scripts, opting for a more organic arrangement that mirrors the spontaneity of the artist's hand.
