This landscape by Henri-Edmond Cross captures the beauty of the Massif des Maures in southern France. Executed in a pointillist style, the painting uses small dots of colour to create a luminous and vibrant depiction of the natural world.
Henri-Edmond Cross, a French painter (1856-1910), was a significant figure in the Neo-Impressionist movement. He, along with Georges Seurat and Paul Signac, developed a style characterised by the application of small, distinct dots of colour, known as pointillism. This technique aimed to achieve a greater degree of luminosity and colour mixing in the viewer's eye, rather than on the canvas. Cross's later works, including this one, show a move away from strict pointillism towards broader, more expressive brushstrokes. 'Les Petits, Montagnes Mauresques' depicts a landscape of the Massif des Maures, a mountain range in the south of France. The composition is built up from small touches of paint in a mosaic-like pattern. The colours are bright and varied, with yellows, greens, blues, and oranges used to represent the landscape. The sky is rendered with lighter blues and whites, suggesting a bright, sunny day. The foreground features a field of wildflowers, adding to the overall sense of natural beauty. The mountains in the background are depicted with darker blues and greens, creating a sense of depth and distance.
