A detailed 1748 etching by Jean Moyreau after Philips Wouwerman, depicting a group of travelling merchants resting by a rural cottage.
This etching, titled Les Marchands Forains, is a reproduction print by the French engraver Jean Moyreau, based on an original painting by the Dutch Golden Age master Philips Wouwerman. Produced in 1748, the work demonstrates the technical precision characteristic of eighteenth-century reproductive printmaking. Moyreau was known for his ability to translate the tonal qualities of oil paintings into the monochromatic medium of copperplate engraving.
The composition depicts a group of travelling merchants resting near a rustic, thatched-roof cottage. A horseman and a rider on a white mount occupy the centre, while figures sit on the grassy bank in the foreground. The scene captures a quiet moment of rural life, typical of the genre subjects favoured by Wouwerman. The sky is rendered with dramatic, cloud-filled expanses, providing a sense of atmosphere that balances the detailed textures of the cottage walls and the animals.
At the base of the print, the inscription provides provenance details, noting that the original painting was held in the collection of the Count of Brühl, a prominent statesman and art collector in the court of Augustus III of Poland. The inclusion of the coat of arms and the formal lettering reflects the prestige associated with such high-quality reproductive prints during this period. This piece offers a window into the eighteenth-century practice of disseminating European masterworks through the medium of print, allowing collectors to own versions of paintings housed in private aristocratic cabinets.
