An eighteenth-century etching by Jean Moyreau, depicting a bustling horse market based on a composition by Philips Wouwerman.
This etching, titled Les Maquignons à la Foire, is a reproduction print by the French engraver Jean Moyreau. It is based on an original painting by the Dutch Golden Age artist Philips Wouwerman. Moyreau was known for his technical skill in translating the painterly qualities of Dutch masters into the medium of printmaking, a practice that allowed these compositions to reach a wider audience across eighteenth-century Europe.
The scene depicts a busy horse market, a subject frequently explored by Wouwerman. In the foreground, figures interact with horses, showcasing the artist's ability to render equine anatomy and human activity with precision. To the right, a group of figures gathers near a large tree, while the middle ground reveals a sprawling fair with tents and various market activities. The background recedes into a flat, open horizon, typical of the Dutch topographical tradition, under a vast, cloud-filled sky.
Moyreau employs a range of hatching and cross-hatching techniques to create depth and texture. The tonal variations in the sky and the ground plane demonstrate the engraver's control over light and shadow. The inclusion of the coat of arms and the detailed inscription at the bottom of the plate reflects the conventions of eighteenth-century print publishing, where works were often dedicated to patrons or members of the aristocracy. This print provides a clear example of the cross-cultural exchange between Dutch painting and French printmaking during the period. The composition balances the activity of the market with the expansive nature of the environment, maintaining a sense of order despite the numerous figures present. It remains a representative example of the reproductive print tradition, where the engraver acts as an interpreter of the original painter's vision.
