Ilya Mashkov, a founding member of the Jack of Diamonds group, produced this still life in 1934. The composition displays the artist's characteristic focus on material weight and the tactile qualities of everyday objects. A collection of lemons, both whole and halved, occupies the foreground, their textured rinds rendered with a deliberate, almost sculptural density. Beside them sits a white ceramic sugar bowl with an openwork lattice pattern, providing a stark contrast to the dark, reflective surfaces of the glass decanter and tumbler placed to the left. In the centre, a vase holds a cluster of helichrysum, or strawflowers, their warm tones of red and yellow offering a break from the cooler, darker background. Mashkov employs a firm, controlled brushwork that defines the volume of each object, ensuring that the fruit and vessels appear grounded upon the table surface. The lighting is focused, creating subtle reflections on the glass and highlighting the porous skin of the lemons.
