A formal oil portrait of American tycoon Leland Stanford by the French Academic painter Ernest Meissonier, executed in 1881.
Ernest Meissonier was a leading figure in French Academic art during the nineteenth century. He was primarily known for his precision and technical skill in small-scale works. Leland Stanford, the American railroad magnate and Governor of California, sat for this portrait during a visit to Europe in 1881. The painting captures Stanford in a moment of repose, seated in a curved wooden armchair. Stanford is positioned slightly off-centre, leaning back into the red velvet cushioning of the chair. His right hand rests on his thigh, while his left hand is placed on the armrest, holding a small stack of papers. He wears a formal black frock coat over a matching waistcoat. A gold watch chain with a red fob hangs across his torso. His expression is direct and steady, looking towards the viewer with a slight tilt of the head. The artist uses a warm palette of ochre and burnt sienna for the background, which provides a contrast to the dark tones of the clothing. To the right, a walking stick with a pale handle rests against the chair. On the desk, a newspaper or pamphlet lies open, its printed text suggested by quick, horizontal strokes of grey paint. Meissonier applied paint with great control, a characteristic of his Academic training. The textures of the velvet upholstery and the polished wood of the chair are rendered with clarity, as is the crisp white of the shirt collar. This work is a departure from Meissonier's usual military genre paintings, showing his ability to handle life-size portraiture. It is a formal record of a prominent nineteenth-century figure.
