A masterful wood engraving by Timothy Cole, reproducing a scene from Vittore Carpaccio's Legend of Saint Ursula cycle with exceptional tonal detail.
This wood engraving by Timothy Cole reproduces a scene from the cycle of the Legend of Saint Ursula, originally painted by the Venetian master Vittore Carpaccio. Cole, a master of the wood engraving medium, was commissioned by The Century Magazine to document the great works of European art. His technique involves an extraordinary range of tonal variation, achieved through the precise manipulation of line density and depth. By varying the width and proximity of his cuts, Cole translates the painterly qualities of the original Renaissance work into a monochromatic print.
The composition depicts a quiet, interior moment. A figure sits in contemplation beside a bed, while a woman stands before him, gesturing with a small object. The scene is framed by architectural elements that suggest a domestic space of the fifteenth century. A small devotional image hangs on the wall above the bed, adding a layer of religious context to the narrative. Cole captures the texture of the fabrics, the soft fall of light, and the specific stillness of the original painting with remarkable fidelity.
Timothy Cole was instrumental in the revival of wood engraving as a fine art form in the late nineteenth century. His work is noted for its ability to replicate the nuances of oil paint, charcoal, and other media. This print demonstrates his technical control, particularly in the rendering of shadows and the subtle gradients across the drapery. The work remains a primary example of how reproductive printmaking allowed audiences to engage with distant European masterpieces during the Victorian era. It is a study in light, shadow, and the translation of colour into a sophisticated grey scale.
