A detailed Mannerist etching by Christoph Jamnitzer, featuring a central lion's head framed by symmetrical serpents and ornate scrollwork.
This etching by the Nuremberg goldsmith and engraver Christoph Jamnitzer belongs to the tradition of the grotesque, a style that flourished during the late Renaissance and Mannerist periods. The composition features a central lion's head, rendered with a fierce, almost human-like expression, flanked by two serpents that coil symmetrically around the creature. Above the lion, a crown supports a small, stylised tree, while delicate insect-like forms emerge from the surrounding scrollwork.
Jamnitzer was a master of the 'New Grotesque' style, which moved away from the classical restraint of the earlier Renaissance. His work often prioritised the imaginative and the bizarre, blending natural forms with architectural and decorative elements. The etching demonstrates his technical precision, using varied line weights to create depth and texture within the metallic, serpentine, and organic components of the design. The symmetry of the piece suggests it was intended as a model for goldsmiths, jewellers, or furniture makers, providing a template for decorative metalwork or wood carving.
The influence of the Jamnitzer family, particularly Christoph's grandfather Wenzel, is evident in the attention to detail and the fusion of natural history with fantasy. This print is part of a larger series of designs that explore the boundaries between the real and the fantastical. By isolating the lion's head within a framework of scrolls and ribbons, Jamnitzer creates a self-contained emblem that reflects the period's fascination with curiosity and the cabinet of wonders. The work remains a clear example of the high level of craftsmanship expected of German artisans in the early seventeenth century, where the distinction between fine art and applied design was frequently blurred.
