A detailed seventeenth-century etching by Gillis Peeters (I) depicting a dramatic lion hunt in a North African setting.
This etching, titled Leeuwenjacht, captures a dramatic encounter between a lion and hunting dogs. Gillis Peeters (I), a Flemish painter and etcher active during the seventeenth century, demonstrates his technical proficiency in this work. The composition focuses on the central struggle, where the lion dominates the foreground, its muscular form rendered with precise, rhythmic lines. The artist employs a clear distinction between the foreground action and the distant, atmospheric background, which features a faint outline of a settlement and riders, suggesting a setting in North Africa, as indicated by the French inscription, Veue et Esloignement d'Arzeni en Barbarie.
The etching technique allows for a high degree of detail in the lion's mane and the textures of the surrounding foliage. The tree on the left provides a vertical anchor for the scene, framing the chaotic movement of the animals. Peeters, known for his contributions to the Flemish Baroque tradition, often explored themes of travel and exotic locales. This print reflects the period's fascination with wild animals and the spectacle of the hunt, a common subject in European art of the era. The balance between the aggressive posture of the lion and the defensive stance of the dogs creates a sense of immediate tension. The work is a fine example of seventeenth-century printmaking, where the artist uses cross-hatching and varied line weights to define form and depth without the need for colour. The inclusion of the publisher's mark, Drevet excud, suggests this was part of a wider series of prints intended for a public audience interested in geography and natural history.
