Description

A modernist sculpture by László Moholy-Nagy, featuring translucent Perspex and wire to explore the interaction of light and space.

László Moholy-Nagy, a central figure in the Bauhaus movement, explored the intersection of light, space, and industrial materials throughout his career. This work, titled Leda and the Swan, demonstrates his interest in transparency and the physical properties of modern plastics. By utilising Perspex, a material that was relatively new to the artistic sphere during the mid-twentieth century, the artist creates a form that interacts with its environment through refraction and shadow rather than solid mass. The sculpture consists of curved, translucent sheets of acrylic, punctuated by circular cut-outs and held together by thin wire elements. The composition avoids traditional representational forms, opting instead for a spatial arrangement that suggests movement and fluidity. The title references the classical mythological subject, yet the execution remains strictly non-objective. Moholy-Nagy was concerned with the concept of 'space-light' modulation, where the object acts as a vehicle for light to pass through, creating a dynamic experience for the viewer as they move around the piece. This work reflects the artist's belief that art should engage with the technological advancements of the era. By suspending the sculpture, he removes it from the traditional pedestal, allowing it to occupy the air as a three-dimensional drawing. The interplay between the rigid, geometric cut-outs and the organic, sweeping curves of the Perspex creates a tension between industrial precision and natural form. It is a study in how synthetic materials can be manipulated to create ethereal effects, challenging the viewer to perceive the object not as a static entity, but as a shifting configuration of light and transparency.
