A detailed 1774 etching by Jean Bernard Restout depicting the allegorical return of the French parlements under Louis XVI.
This etching by Jean Bernard Restout, titled 'Le Retour du Parlement', serves as a visual commentary on the political climate of 18th-century France. Produced in 1774, the work commemorates the recall of the parlements by Louis XVI, an act that initially generated significant public optimism. The composition employs classical allegory to convey its message: the central figure of Louis XVI is depicted leaning upon the personification of Virtue, while Justice is shown restoring order to the realm. Above, winged figures representing Fame and Public Felicity descend from the clouds, scattering floral tributes upon the scene.
Restout, a member of the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, demonstrates a command of line and shadow characteristic of the period. The architectural backdrop, featuring a structure reminiscent of the Palais de Justice, provides a grounded setting for the ethereal figures above. The crowd gathered in the middle distance suggests the public interest surrounding these political manoeuvres. The artist uses a delicate etching technique to define the folds of drapery and the expressions of the figures, balancing the weight of the historical subject with the lightness of the celestial elements. The inscription at the base, 'Louis XVI, appuyé sur sa vertu, relève la justice qui ramène la félicité publique', clarifies the intended narrative of the piece, positioning the monarch as a restorer of national harmony. This print offers a glimpse into the visual language used to legitimise royal authority during the early years of Louis XVI's reign, before the onset of the French Revolution fundamentally altered the political order.
