Description

A 1942 modernist work by Wifredo Lam, featuring a reclining figure rendered with mask-like features and angular, flattened forms.

Wifredo Lam painted Le Repos du modèle in 1942, a period during which he returned to his native Cuba after years in Europe. This work reflects his synthesis of European modernism and the cultural heritage of the Caribbean. The figure, reclining in a pose reminiscent of classical odalisques, is transformed through Lam's distinct visual vocabulary. Her features are angular and mask-like, drawing inspiration from African sculpture and the aesthetic traditions of the African diaspora.

The composition is structured around a series of flattened planes. The figure rests upon a striped surface that creates a sense of spatial ambiguity, typical of Lam's approach to interior settings. The palette is dominated by cool tones, including shades of blue, grey, and muted violet, which contrast with the starker, more graphic lines defining the subject's anatomy. The background is simplified, removing unnecessary detail to focus the viewer on the relationship between the body and the surrounding space.

Lam's work from this era often explored the intersection of human form and spiritual or mythological themes. By stripping away the naturalistic rendering of the model, he presents a figure that feels both grounded and otherworldly. The lines are deliberate and heavy, reinforcing the structural quality of the painting. This piece demonstrates his ability to adapt the techniques of Cubism and Surrealism to express a specific cultural identity. It remains a significant example of his mid-career output, where he successfully merged international avant-garde styles with his own personal and regional history. The print captures the texture of the original paint application, allowing for a close examination of his brushwork and the layered application of colour.
