A geometric abstract composition by Italian artist Galliano Mazzon, exploring the relationship between primary shapes and colour fields.
Galliano Mazzon, an Italian painter active throughout the twentieth century, engaged deeply with the principles of geometric abstraction. In this work, titled Le quattro stagioni, the artist reduces the cyclical nature of the seasons into a series of primary and secondary shapes. The composition relies on the interplay between a central yellow oval, a white triangle, and a red rectangle, all set against a backdrop of intersecting planes in blue, green, brown, and black. Mazzon avoids representational imagery, choosing instead to communicate through the weight and balance of colour fields. The sharp edges of the polygons contrast with the soft curve of the central oval, creating a sense of tension within the frame. The palette is deliberate, using high-contrast hues to define the boundaries of each geometric segment. By stripping away external detail, the artist invites the viewer to consider the structural essence of the subject matter rather than its literal appearance. This piece reflects the broader European interest in non-objective art during the mid-twentieth century, where artists sought a universal visual language. Mazzon, who also dedicated much of his career to art education for children, maintained a clear, pedagogical approach to his own painting. His work often displays a rigorous attention to the relationship between form and space. This particular composition demonstrates his ability to organise complex visual information into a coherent, balanced arrangement. The lack of texture or brushwork allows the viewer to focus entirely on the interaction of the shapes, making it a study in pure visual rhythm and spatial harmony.
