A pointillist cityscape by Maximilien Luce, 'Le Quai Saint-Michel et Notre-Dame' captures a bustling Parisian scene along the Seine, with the iconic cathedral rendered in luminous dots of colour.
Maximilien Luce (1858-1941) was a French Neo-Impressionist artist, known for his paintings, illustrations, engravings, and graphic art. He was a prominent figure in the Parisian art scene, associated with artists like Camille Pissarro and Théo van Rysselberghe. Luce's work often depicted urban subjects, working-class people, and industrial scenes, rendered in a pointillist style. He was also politically active, with anarchist sympathies that influenced his choice of subject matter. 'Le Quai Saint-Michel et Notre-Dame' presents a view of the Seine river embankment in Paris, with the iconic Notre-Dame cathedral in the background. The painting is executed in a pointillist technique, using small, distinct dots of colour to create a luminous effect. The composition is divided into three horizontal bands: the sky, the cathedral and buildings, and the quai with figures. The figures are rendered with minimal detail, their forms suggested by the arrangement of coloured dots. The colour palette is dominated by blues, pinks, and yellows, creating a sense of light and atmosphere.
