A fine 18th-century engraving by Jean Ouvrier after a painting by Johann Eleazar Schenau, depicting an intimate domestic scene of a family.
This fine etching and engraving, titled Le Petit Glouton, is the work of the French engraver Jean Ouvrier. It is based on an original painting by Johann Eleazar Schenau, who served as the court painter to the Prince of Saxony. The scene depicts a domestic interior, a common subject within the Rococo period, where the focus shifts from grand historical narratives to the intimate details of daily life and family dynamics.
The composition centres on a mother seated with her children, while a man, likely the father, stands to the left. The narrative revolves around a playful, domestic moment involving a child being fed or attended to. The artist employs a refined technique of cross-hatching and stippling to render the textures of the clothing, the soft skin of the infants, and the shadowed interior of the room. The lighting is carefully managed to draw the eye toward the central group, creating a sense of warmth and familial connection.
Jean Ouvrier was known for his ability to translate the painterly qualities of his contemporaries into the medium of print. His work reflects the technical precision required for eighteenth-century reproductive engraving. The inclusion of the original painter's name and the publisher's details at the base of the print follows the standard practice for high-quality engravings of the era, which were often produced to circulate the compositions of popular painters among a wider audience of collectors. This print offers a glimpse into the aesthetic values of the mid-eighteenth century, where domesticity and the observation of childhood were increasingly popular themes in European art.
