A nineteenth-century French lithograph by Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet, depicting a character from Parisian street life with satirical detail.
Denis-Auguste-Marie Raffet was a draughtsman and lithographer known for his military subjects and social observations during the July Monarchy in France. This lithograph, titled Le Père Riboule, captures a specific character type common in the street life of nineteenth-century Paris. The central figure, a stout man with a rugged appearance, holds a small pitcher, suggesting a moment of respite or a habitual visit to a local tavern. His attire, including a heavy jacket and a flat cap, reflects the working-class fashion of the era.
Raffet employs a precise lithographic technique to render the textures of the man's clothing and the surrounding environment. The background features secondary figures in top hats, providing a contrast between the central character and the bourgeois observers. The composition is structured to focus on the individual, using the surrounding figures to establish a sense of place and social context. The text below the image adds a layer of narrative, referencing Prince Eugène, which was a common trope in Raffet's work to link contemporary figures to the Napoleonic era.
This print demonstrates the artist's ability to combine observational detail with a satirical edge. Raffet was a student of Nicolas-Toussaint Charlet and shared his mentor's interest in the lives of ordinary soldiers and civilians. His work often serves as a visual record of the social strata in Paris, documenting the appearance and mannerisms of the populace. The print is characterised by its clear line work and balanced tonal range, typical of the high-quality lithographic production found in French print shops of the period. It offers a glimpse into the visual culture of the time, where such prints were widely circulated and appreciated for their wit and technical execution.
