A graphic representation of Le Corbusier's Modulor system, illustrating the relationship between human proportions and architectural scale.
Le Modulor is a visual representation of the anthropometric scale of proportions devised by the architect Le Corbusier. Developed during the 1940s, this system sought to reconcile the mathematical precision of the golden ratio with the physical dimensions of the human body. The design aims to standardise architectural measurements based on the height of a man with an uplifted arm, creating a universal language for construction and design.
The composition features a stylised, silhouetted human figure positioned within a grid of geometric shapes and vertical bands. The use of a limited palette, including deep blue, terracotta, and white, reflects the aesthetic sensibilities of the period. Fine lines and calligraphic flourishes overlay the structured forms, suggesting the movement and organic nature of the human form in relation to rigid architectural space. The work functions as both a technical tool and a graphic statement on the relationship between human scale and the built environment.
Le Corbusier viewed this system as a means to improve the quality of living spaces by ensuring that furniture, rooms, and buildings were inherently compatible with human proportions. The print captures the essence of his theoretical framework, which influenced mid-century architecture and urban planning. By integrating the human figure into a mathematical grid, the image communicates the intent to harmonise industrial production with individual comfort. This piece remains a primary reference for those interested in the history of architectural theory and the application of geometric systems in design.
