A detailed etching by Maxime Lalanne capturing the riverside promenade of Rouen in 1881, featuring the city's iconic cathedral spires.
Maxime Lalanne was a central figure in the nineteenth-century etching revival in France. This work, titled Le Cours la Reine, depicts the riverside promenade in Rouen. Lalanne demonstrates his technical mastery through the use of varied line weights to define the atmospheric quality of the scene. The foreground features dense, dark foliage that frames the composition, drawing the eye toward the distant cityscape. The spires of Rouen Cathedral rise above the tree line, providing a vertical counterpoint to the horizontal expanse of the Seine.
Lalanne utilised a precise, controlled etching technique to render the textures of the water, the architectural silhouettes, and the soft, cloud-filled sky. His ability to capture light and shadow through hatching and cross-hatching is evident in the reflection of the buildings upon the river surface. The inclusion of small figures along the bank provides a sense of scale and human activity, grounding the scene in a specific moment of daily life. This print reflects the artist's interest in documenting urban and natural environments with clarity and precision. Lalanne was highly regarded for his instructional writings on the craft of etching, and this piece demonstrates the principles he advocated: clarity of line, tonal balance, and a disciplined approach to composition. The work remains a fine example of the period's dedication to topographical accuracy combined with artistic sensitivity.
