This oil on canvas painting by Raoul Dufy depicts a seated bather in his signature Fauvist style. The composition features bold colours and simplified forms, capturing a sense of leisure and joy.
Raoul Dufy (1877-1953) was a French painter, graphic artist, and designer known for his colourful, decorative compositions. Associated with Fauvism early in his career, Dufy developed a distinctive style characterised by simplified forms, bold colours, and a light-hearted approach to his subjects. He often depicted scenes of leisure, such as regattas, horse races, and musical events, as well as landscapes and portraits. His work also extended into textile design and ceramics. 'Large Bather' exemplifies Dufy's mature style. A woman in a dark bathing suit sits against a backdrop of stylised buildings and foliage. The palette is dominated by blues, greens, and oranges, applied in broad, energetic strokes. The figure is rendered with simplified forms and a focus on contour, while the background is treated in a more abstract manner. The overall effect is one of spontaneity and joy, capturing the essence of a summer day by the sea.
