A detailed etching by Max Klinger depicting centaurs navigating a rocky mountain slope, from his 1881 Intermezzi portfolio.
Landslide is the sixth plate from Max Klinger's fourth portfolio, titled Intermezzi. Published in 1881, this work demonstrates the artist's technical command of etching and aquatint. Klinger frequently combined classical mythology with naturalistic settings, creating a tension between the mundane world and the fantastic.
In this composition, a group of centaurs occupies a rocky, uneven terrain. The foreground features sharp, angular rock formations that suggest a recent geological shift. The centaurs appear small against the scale of the mountainside, their forms rendered with precise, delicate lines. Klinger uses aquatint to provide tonal depth, particularly in the shadows cast by the boulders and the reflection of the trees in the water below. The background opens into a wide, atmospheric vista, contrasting the immediate chaos of the landslide with the stillness of the distant hills.
Klinger was a central figure in German Symbolism. His graphic cycles often explored psychological states and the intersection of human experience with the natural environment. This print is characteristic of his approach, where the mythological figures do not dominate the scene but rather exist as part of a larger, indifferent natural order. The work invites the viewer to observe the interplay of light and texture across the stone surfaces, while the presence of the centaurs adds a layer of narrative ambiguity. The print is a fine example of the late nineteenth-century revival of etching as a medium for complex, imaginative storytelling.
