A pastoral scene by Jan van Gool depicting a milkmaid tending to cattle in a quiet, expansive Dutch countryside.
Jan van Gool, a Dutch painter and biographer of artists, produced this pastoral scene during the eighteenth century. The composition follows the conventions of the Dutch Italianate tradition, which favoured idyllic rural settings populated by livestock and figures. A milkmaid sits at the centre of the frame, occupied with her task, while a variety of animals, including cows, sheep, and a goat, occupy the foreground. A small dog sits attentively near the milkmaid, providing a sense of domestic order within the open field.
The background features a low horizon line, typical of Dutch painting, which allows for an expansive sky. Faint silhouettes of distant buildings and a windmill suggest a rural settlement, grounding the scene in the Dutch countryside. The lighting is soft, suggesting either early morning or late afternoon, which casts gentle shadows across the grass. The tree on the right provides a vertical anchor for the composition, framing the figures and creating a sense of depth.
Van Gool is perhaps better known for his written work, 'De Nieuwe Schouburg der Nederlantsche kunstschilders en schilderessen', which documented the lives of painters from his era. His own artistic output reflects the aesthetic preferences of the time, focusing on the harmony between humanity and the natural world. The brushwork is precise, capturing the textures of the animals' coats and the fabric of the milkmaid's clothing with clarity. This work offers a glimpse into the agrarian life of the period, presented with a calm and orderly disposition. The palette remains grounded in earthy tones, reflecting the natural environment of the Dutch provinces.
