A precise 1851 etching by Jacobus Ludovicus Cornet, depicting a traditional Dutch post mill in a quiet, open rural setting.
This etching by the Dutch artist Jacobus Ludovicus Cornet, dated 1851, captures a quiet moment in the rural Netherlands. The composition centres on a traditional post mill, a structure common to the Dutch countryside during the nineteenth century. Cornet employs a clean, precise line to define the wooden framework of the mill, the sails, and the surrounding terrain. The artist uses minimal shading, allowing the white of the paper to represent the open sky and the flat horizon.
In the background, a secondary, smaller windmill is visible, alongside the faint outlines of buildings and trees. Two small figures stand near the centre of the composition, providing a sense of scale to the vast, open space. The etching technique is direct and unadorned, reflecting the artist's focus on documenting the vernacular architecture of his home region. The work is marked as a first proof, which offers a glimpse into the artist's process and his initial approach to the subject matter.
Cornet was active during a period when Dutch artists frequently returned to the themes of their national heritage, often focusing on the interaction between human industry and the natural environment. This print is a clear example of that interest, stripped of unnecessary detail. The work is held in the collection of the Rijksmuseum, which preserves many of Cornet's graphic works. It is an excellent choice for those who appreciate the technical discipline of nineteenth-century printmaking and the historical character of the Dutch countryside.
